Nokia Siemens hopes to close Nortel deal by Q3
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) said on Monday it hopes to close its $650 million acquisition of Nortel Networks’ advanced wireless technology business by the third quarter of this year. Telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks said on Friday it will sell its advanced wireless technology business to NSN, propelling NSN into the No.2 position in the CDMA market, challenging market leader Alcatel-Lucent.

However, Nokia Siemens deal sparks fall
Telecoms were in focus yesterday, as falling commodities prices and weaker banking stocks led European bourses lower. Investors reacted negatively to the weekend’s news that Nokia Siemens Networks will spend $650m to buy the core operations of Nortel, the Canadian telecoms equipment manufacturer that is under bankruptcy court protection. Nokia’s shares fell 4.3 per cent to €10.29 in Finland and Siemens was 3.4 per cent lower at €48.93 in Germany as analysts expressed doubts about the move.

Apple says million iPhone 3GS sold in first three days
Apple says it has sold a million of its new iPhone 3GS model in the first three days since its worldwide launch on Friday. The press release is also interesting for including a “quote” from Steve Jobs, who you might recall is the company’s chief executive, and who in an interesting development was said, by a mysteriously unsourced story in the Wall Street Journal, to have had a liver transplant earlier this year. “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

Microsoft debuts free security software
Microsoft is releasing a test version of its free security software on Tuesday in the US, Brazil and Israel, aiming for broader adoption than it had with a previous paid-for product. Dubbed Microsoft Security Essentials, the program will compete with free distributions from the likes of AVG Technologies and Panda Software, as well as a plethora of more extensive fee-based security ware. To head off antitrust objections, Microsoft will not bundle the program with Windows 7 or other products. Microsoft executives said that they were seeking to reach consumers in the developing world who had unguarded PCs that were prey for malicious software.
